China: Urban Landscapes from Chongqing to Beijing

Cyberpunk skylines and reconstructed tradition in China’s megacities.

Visiting China challenges the way we, as Europeans, define “authenticity.” Outside Beijing, many historical sites have been demolished and rebuilt—products of the Cultural Revolution and rapid urbanization.

I struggled to find charm in these reconstructed temples and streets, so shiny and pristine they felt artificial. Yet, I recognize that my affinity for ancient “dusty” beauty reflects a deeply Eurocentric perspective.

That said, I found unexpected beauty in Chongqing, often nicknamed the “Cyberpunk City.” Buzzing on TikTok for its futuristic skyline, it did not disappoint. It’s a colossal collection of neon-lit skyscrapers, exuding dystopian vibes straight out of Blade Runner.
